MyProtein Haul

Hey everyone, different kind of post from me today. I've wanted to branch out including some health and fitness posts on my blog for quite some time now but was unsure how many of you wanted to read it but I thought, what the heck, I'll do it anyway.

I've upped my gym schedule by a few more times a week compared to months ago, as well changing my entire routine too so I thought I'd tell you about the products I've been using to get to where I am today. Myprotein.com is the daddy when it comes to affordable sports nutrition and supplements. I mainly use it for a few main items which I'm about to tell you about, but could happily spend a lot of money on there!

Maxitone Pink Shaker
MyProtein kindly gifted me with a couple of items to try out over the past few weeks and I thought I'd tell you my first impressions. It's important to know my current routine first so you can get an overall idea of my fitness level. I'm currently going to the gym around 3-5 times a week depending on my schedule and my main focus is spinning classes 3 times a week. The idea of them at first was laughable and I never would have stepped foot in one had I not been bullied into it a little bit. Now I'm so glad because I realised I love it. The adrenalin and rush of knowing how much you've achieved in 45 - 60 minutes is enough to keep me wanting more.

I have daily protein shakes and for the past few months have been using the MyProtein Vanilla Impact Whey Protein which is amazing. Last year I tried the Maxitone Sculptress range and it has to be said, it was terrible. The lumps were so big and it tasted disgusting, I just couldn't drink it. It put me off protein and I wish it hadn't for so long as you will see if you try this that they're nowhere near alike. For a huge price difference, the Impact Whey from MyProtein is easy to mix, goes well with water or milk and you get tons of it.

L-R - Impact Whey Protein Vanilla & Impact Whey Protein Cookies & Cream* - £14.99 per kilo
The Vanilla Impact Whey is great but I fancied a change. That's where the Cookies and Cream* stepped up. It's exactly as nice as it sounds, you wouldn't think it's that good for you really! I prefer to mix my protein with milk post workout although it does slow down the protein digestion. Can also feel a little heavy on the stomach pre workout.

Another product I've been trialling and is completely new to me is BCAA (Branched Chain Amino Acids). BCAAs are essential amino acids which are required to maintain lean tissue. Unlike other nutrients, BCAAs are metabolised in the muscles directly instead of in the stomach. They are also good for people who are on a calorie deficit diet as they will help prevent your body from using muscle as energy when your fat and carbohydrate levels are low.

To save time when I'm on the go, I usually mix the BCAA and Impact Whey Protein in my shaker and they seem to go well together. The BCAA reviews stated that the taste wasn't the best but I completely disagree. I'm fussy so if I don't like something, I just won't have it. The berry taste overpowers the cookies and cream but mixed with the vanilla they work really well together and I can down them quickly pre and post workout.

BCAA - Berry Blast*- £14.49 for 250g
Just to see how much of an impact the BCAAs have had on my body, I did a little test and decided to take them every day for a week pre and post workout and then not take it whilst exercising for a week to see if there was any difference. Let's just say I only managed 2 days without taking it. I felt so weak, lethargic and could barely make it to the end of my workout. I'm not exaggerating when I say I can't cope without them now. One other thing is that you use a tiny amount (5g) 2-4 times a day so although the bag is only 250g, this will last you at least a couple of months, maybe longer.

Overall I'm really happy with MyProtein and wouldn't shop elsewhere for my supplements. Their shakers aren't as good as my pink maxitone, but you can't have everything!

Would I recommend the products?

I would certainly recommend them all. The BCAA's especially has made a huge difference in terms of my fitness. I feel they have really helped push me further, whether it's just mentally or physically. I'll keep an update over the next couple of months to see how I progress. These products have completely changed my workout and I will be re-purchasing over and over!

I'd be interested to know whether you would like me to do more fitness type posts or maybe even create a separate blog? Let me know what you think.

Little disclaimer: although the BCAA and Cookies & Cream protein was gifted for review purposes, I recommend them completely and have plenty of their products to vouch for how good they are.

  1. Great post Paula,

I completely agree with the awesome taste of Myprotein's Cookie & Cream Whey Protein. I was using it for almost all of 2015 and it never got old! Mixed incredibly well with milk and a banana for extra calories and I definitely made good progress with it also.

As you quite right point out, it does way you down a bit if taken pre-workout but the results you get from Myprotein's products are absolutely fantastic. Great products, great value and certainly a great supplement company
